Our independent review of the Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden took us to a property with direct views of the Zwinger, an almost flawless room and service that remained pleasantly discreet in the background. Our stay at the Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden had many strong moments. At the same time, we were surprised by a few things we would not have expected at a five-star hotel – above all the organisation at breakfast and some of the additional charges.

Two nights at the Taschenbergpalais

For our city break in Dresden from 12 to 14 June 2026, we deliberately wanted to treat ourselves to a hotel that offered considerably more than just a standard overnight stay.

We chose the Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski Dresden, which is officially classified as a five-star hotel. We booked a Palais Room for two nights including breakfast via Booking.com.

The entire stay was fully self-funded.

The hotel is clearly positioned in the upper price segment. Accordingly, our expectations were high when it came to the room, service, cleanliness and the many small details that are supposed to distinguish a hotel of this category from a good city hotel.

And that is exactly where our stay became interesting.

Location & Arrival: It is hard to get more central in Dresden

A first look at the surroundings quickly makes it clear why the location is one of the hotel’s major strengths.

The hotel is situated right in the heart of Dresden’s Old Town, directly opposite the Zwinger and immediately next to the Royal Palace. For a city break, this is extremely convenient. Many of Dresden’s main sights are essentially right outside the hotel door.

We discovered another advantage later on: our Palais Room looked directly onto the Zwinger. Especially in the morning or when returning to the room, the view felt quite special and became one of the impressions that genuinely stayed with us.

Arriving by car was straightforward as well. One particularly convenient feature is that the hotel can be accessed directly from the parking garage.

Less pleasant was the price: parking costs €35 per night. For our two-night stay, that meant an additional €70.

We are not surprised that parking in the city centre comes at a cost. At this price, however, it is certainly something we would recommend factoring into the overall cost before booking.

Check-in: A friendly welcome and the first surprise

Our first impression of the hotel was positive.

At reception, we were offered sparkling wine, water or orange juice. The staff were friendly and attentive, and we also remember the concierge as particularly welcoming and approachable.

The welcome drink was a nice gesture in itself, although we did not find the presentation quite as refined throughout as we might have expected from a hotel of this category. This is not a major criticism. But at a hotel with these standards, you naturally pay closer attention to the details.

At check-in, a €100 deposit per person was also required to cover potential additional charges. This type of security deposit is not unusual in hotels of this category. As we did not use any services that resulted in additional charges during our stay, it ultimately had no further relevance for us.

Overall, however, our impression of the check-in experience was clearly positive. The staff were friendly and professional and gave us the feeling from the very beginning that guests were being well looked after.

Our Palais Room: Plenty of space and a view that stays with you
Our Palais Room: Plenty of space and a view that stays with you

Our Palais Room: Plenty of space and a view that stays with you

Our room was one of the strongest parts of the stay. The Palais Room felt spacious, well maintained and high quality. Above all, the view of the Zwinger turned a very good hotel room into something we will genuinely remember.

There was also little to criticise when it came to the room’s amenities. The bathrobes provided were a small but welcome touch. When we switched on the television, we were even greeted personally with a welcome message. Details like this are not essential, but they do show that thought has been given to the guest experience.

There was one thing we would have liked to feel a little more personal: only the lead guest on the booking was addressed. Especially for couples or families, it would be nicer if a message like this included all registered guests.

Our impressions of the room itself were otherwise very similar. We were both impressed by the size, condition and view.

In terms of functionality, however, we saw a little room for improvement. For example, we would have appreciated a simple way to quickly hang up a jacket in the entrance area, such as an open coat rack.

It is not a major issue, but small everyday details like this can ultimately make the difference between a room that is simply beautiful and one that is also perfectly practical.

Cleanliness: We really had to look — and found nothing

There is not much to say about cleanliness, and in this case that is a good thing.

Our room was very clean, and so was the bathroom. Even when we looked more closely, we found nothing that stood out negatively. At a hotel in this price range, that should of course be expected. Even so, it is worth mentioning when that standard is actually met.

The general condition of the property also left a good impression. We noticed a few minor details in the public areas, but overall the impression remained clearly positive.

Sleep Comfort: Same room, different night

When it came to sleep comfort, one minor weakness of the room became noticeable: it was relatively easy to hear noise from the neighbouring room. Even before we went to sleep, we could clearly hear sounds next door, including footsteps and the clicking of shoes.

The bed itself, on the other hand, was very comfortable. We were also impressed by the blackout options, as well as the generous selection of pillows and additional blankets.

Overall, the sleep comfort was good, although the noticeable sound transmission remained a point that we took into account in our rating.

Bathroom: High quality and spotless, but not completely dark at night
Bathroom: High quality and spotless, but not completely dark at night

Bathroom: High quality and spotless, but not completely dark at night

The bathroom also made a very good first impression.

It was spotless, functional and stocked with a range of toiletries. Shampoo, shower gel, lotion and soap were all provided. We also appreciated the illuminated make-up mirror. The toilet was separated from the rest of the bathroom by a glass partition.

During the day, everything worked exactly as we would expect. At night, however, one detail became noticeable that we probably would never have mentioned during the day: the light could not be switched off completely. A subtle mirror light remained on.

For people who sleep best in near-total darkness, something like this can be surprisingly distracting.

It is a small detail, but one we would immediately check again on a future stay.

Service: attentive, discreet and pleasantly unobtrusive

If there was one area where we were completely in agreement, it was the service.

Throughout our stay, we found the staff friendly, helpful and professional. What we particularly appreciated was how smoothly so much happened in the background without the service ever feeling intrusive.

While we were out, our room was cleaned and tidied. When we returned, it was immediately clear that someone had taken care of everything — yet we had barely noticed the process itself.

We found exactly this kind of discretion very pleasant. The service was there when needed, but never pushed itself into the foreground.

Overall, the interaction with guests also felt considerably more relaxed and straightforward than we had expected before staying at a hotel in this category.

Discreet service you barely saw, but definitely felt.

Breakfast: Very good food — after waiting in line

Breakfast was where things became more complicated. We were impressed by the quality of the food, and the selection left little to be desired.

In theory, we could have ended this section on a very positive note. In theory. Because first, we had to wait for a table. And not just for a brief moment. A clearly visible queue had formed in front of the breakfast area.

While we waited, we were offered sparkling wine and orange juice. That was a thoughtful touch. But a glass of sparkling wine may make a queue more pleasant — it does not make it disappear. At a hotel in this category, we simply would not have expected to start the morning by waiting for an available breakfast table.

For us, this was one of the clearest weaknesses of the stay. Another issue was that the different breakfast areas varied considerably in atmosphere: some felt refined and elegant, while others felt more like transitional spaces. The contrast was somewhat strange.

The breakfast itself was good. The organisation, however, did not feel quite on the same level.

Spa, Indoor Pool, Restaurant and Bar: available, but not tested by us

The hotel includes a spa area, an indoor pool, a restaurant and a bar. We did not use any of these facilities during our stay, so they are not included in our rating.

The general principle behind the eingecheckt Score™ is simple: we only rate what we have actually used or experienced ourselves. The mere fact that a particular facility exists does not tell us anything about its quality.

Value for Money: You get a lot, but you also pay for the category

The Taschenbergpalais certainly showed us why people are willing to spend more on a hotel of this class.

The location is excellent. Our room was very impressive. Cleanliness and service were both at a high level, and the breakfast itself was also convincing. Even so, one question kept coming up during our stay: how much is this additional level of luxury personally worth to us?

The hotel clearly operates in a price range where you are not simply paying for a night’s accommodation. You are also paying for the location, service, atmosphere and the expectation that many things will work seamlessly in the background.

That is exactly why additional charges stand out more. We considered the €35 parking fee per night to be high. We also deliberately chose not to use some of the other additional services because, for us, they did not seem attractive enough for the price.

This leaves us in an interesting middle ground when it comes to value for money. We never felt that we were receiving too little in return. Quite the opposite. But we did feel that a stay like this is something you consciously choose to spend money on, rather than simply booking a room for two nights.

Those who make full use of the service, location and distinctive atmosphere get a great deal in return. Those who are mainly looking for a comfortable place to sleep in Dresden will naturally view the pricing more critically.

Technology: As unobtrusively good as technology should be

From a technical point of view, there was nothing during our stay that bothered us.

The Wi-Fi worked very well, charging options for smartphones were available, and both the lighting controls and key card did exactly what they were supposed to do.

That may not sound particularly exciting. But when it comes to hotel technology, that is often a compliment.

If you never have to think twice about the Wi-Fi, power sockets or light switches, they are usually working exactly as they should.

Expectations and Reality: Luxury can be surprisingly relaxed

Before our stay, we certainly had some preconceived ideas about what it might feel like to stay at a hotel in this category.

And to be completely open about it: part of us wondered beforehand whether we might feel slightly out of place there.

We had expected a very formal atmosphere, perhaps somewhat distant guests, and an environment where it would be easy to feel as though you did not quite belong. That was not what we experienced at all.

The atmosphere was considerably more relaxed than we had expected. The staff were friendly and approachable, and among the other guests we never felt as though we constantly had to pay attention to some unwritten social dress code. That was a very positive surprise.

At the same time, the stay also showed us just how quickly expectations rise at a five-star hotel.

A queue at breakfast might be no more than a minor organisational inconvenience at another hotel. Here, it stands out more.

A subtle light in the bathroom might barely be worth mentioning elsewhere. In this price range, you look more closely.

And a €35 parking fee also carries more weight when you have already made a conscious decision to pay for a higher-priced hotel experience.

That is exactly why our overall impression was not entirely consistent.

Overall, the stay came very close to what we imagine a successful luxury hotel experience should be.

At the same time, there were a few details where our expectations of a hotel in this category were not fully met. In the end, it was precisely these smaller points that prevented the overall experience from feeling completely flawless.

Both sides are part of the truth of this review. Interestingly, however, we completely agree on the most important question:

We would come back.

And that probably says more about our stay than any individual score.

Who is the Taschenbergpalais best suited for?

Anyone who wants to explore Dresden on foot and places a high value on a central location will find excellent conditions here.

We can also easily imagine the hotel being a very good choice for couples who deliberately want to treat themselves to a special weekend away.

Luxury travellers are likely to make even greater use of many of the hotel’s services and facilities than we did.

The hotel also seems well suited to business travellers and solo guests.

Families are mentioned as one of the hotel’s target groups as well. However, we did not test any specific family-focused offers or services during this stay and therefore cannot assess them.

Guests arriving by car benefit from the direct parking option, but should factor the €35 parking fee per night into their plans.

Those who are mainly looking for a comfortable place to stay in Dresden and place less value on additional service or the overall luxury-hotel experience will probably find more affordable alternatives.
